Diary begins August 8, 1855, detailing a trip from Norwich, Conn. to Chicago, and thence to the Menominee Indians on the Wolf River in Wisconsin. Rockwell reaches the Indian village Keshena, which he describes, meets Superintendant Huebschmann,the interpreter Charles Grignon, witnesses a grand council concerning a claim of $40,000 from Richard W. Thompson, and attends the Indian Catholic Church. The diary stops mid-sentence on September 10. At the back of the diary are two pages of expenses of the trip from Chicago to the Menominee Indians, dated September 2-October 1, 1855, indicating that Rockwell left the Indian village on the 10th or 11th. There are also six pages of accounts dated Oct. 1-Dec. 22, 1855 and April 14-16, 1856. There are also sixteen pages of miscellaneous mining notes, including a plan of the interior of coal mines in Pittsburgh, Penn. and a journal of Artesian well at Centralia, Ill. describing strata, its thickness, and depth from surface. Accompanied by seven pieces of paper with accounts from 1856 on them, one of them originally the calling card of John A. Rockwell, a jurist and two term senator who probably was Alfred's father.
